Seattle has lots of yoga, and lots of kids. As a result, there are heaps of kid-oriented yoga classes in the area. Whether you're looking for yoga to do with your baby or toddler, something for a child to do on their own, or a yoga class designed for teens, you'll find it within Seattle's city limits.
This article focuses on the yoga options for children aged 3-11; we have a separate piece on yoga for teens.
Classes for you and your child to do together
8 Limbs Yoga 8 Limbs (with studios in Capitol Hill, Phinney Ridge, Wedgwood and West Seattle) occasionally offers a Parent & Child series for moms and dads to attend with their kids. At press time no classes were scheduled, but you can check here to see if one has been added, or email info@8limbsyoga.com to be notified when a new series is started.
Limber Yoga Limber Yoga in West Seattle offers a six-week series (that can also be dropped into) for kids aged 5-11 to attend with a parent or caregiver. Classes are typically held on Friday afternoons, and cost $14 per class to attend with one child ($70 for the whole series) or $16 to attend with two ($80 for the series). Details here.
Seattle Holistic Center The Seattle Holistic Center near Green Lake offers a weekly Family Hatha yoga class, currently on Mondays at 4 p.m. Poses are tailored to the age of attendees, and all ages are welcome. Class costs $17 for a drop-in (covers both you and your child).
Taj Yoga Taj Yoga in Crown Hill holds a class for parents to take with their 3-5 year olds on Sundays at 11:15 a.m. Classes end with cuddles and foot rubs - something we think many adult yoga classes could benefit from. Details here.
Classes for your child to do on their own5Focus 5Focus in South Lake Union offers a weekly yoga class on Saturday mornings, for kids aged 3-10. The format blends games and stories with developmentally appropriate yoga poses. Cost is $14 + tax. Details here.
8 Limbs Yoga 8 Limbs Yoga offers a four-week series for kids at their West Seattle and Capitol Hill locations. The West Seattle location is currently offering both a regular four-week session for kids for $50, and a special YogaGirlz class focused on empowering girls aged 6-11 through yoga and art. Samarya Center The Samarya Center in the Central District is known for its inclusive programs, and their kids programs are no exception. They offer a six-week series for kids aged 3-9, currently offered on Saturday mornings. Cost is $50. A special confidential group is run for girls aged 9-16 who have been the victims of trauma, including abuse, assault, neglect, bullying, out of home placement, death of loved one, injury or illness. (Note: the series is taught by a woman with the beautifully androgynous name of Tristan. She?s a she.) Details of the Samarya Center?s kids programs here.
Sweatbox Sweatbox, a Bikram studio on Capitol Hill, offers a drop-in class for kids aged 5-8. Taught by one of the studio?s owners, the class features ?very general yoga philosophy,? some basic yoga postures and yoga-inspired games. (We imagine this class is conducted in an UNheated room, but it won?t hurt to ask.) Cost is $10 per child ? email sweatboxyoga@yahoo.com for class times and to register.
Taj Yoga Taj Yoga has a novel approach to kids-only classes - they often offer simultaneous classes adults in their second studio. Genius! Classes are Mondays at 4:15 p.m. Details here.
OmCulture If you?re looking for something a little less structured than a class, OmCulture in Wallingford plans to offer ?Mindful Play,? an open gym for parents and their kids (including preschoolers). Facilitators will be on hand to help kids engage in yoga, dance and play. You can sign up to be notified when sessions are scheduled here.
